Interchangeable humidity sensors in Pakistan — Michell HygroSmart I7000XP RH and temperature sensor with calibration stored on board for 30-second field swaps
Michell HygroSmart I7000XP: 0-100 % RH, ±1 % RH (5-95 % RH), ±0.2 °C PT100, -40 to +85 °C, ±1 % RH per year stability and 30-second field interchangeability (I7000XP datasheet 97474 V2).

Relative humidity sensors drift. Dust, condensation, chemical vapours and simple ageing move the reading over time, so every RH measurement in a plant needs periodic checking and, sooner or later, recalibration. The traditional answer is to take the probe or transmitter off line, send it to a laboratory and leave the point unmeasured, or fitted with a spare, for days or weeks. An interchangeable sensor changes that routine: the sensing element and its calibration travel together, and the swap is done in the field.

This note looks at the Michell HygroSmart I7000XP interchangeable humidity and temperature sensor, which Michell describes as offering 30-second field interchangeability on HygroSmart-based probes and transmitters. Figures come from the I7000XP datasheet (issue I7000XP_97474_V2_UK_0216, the copy hosted on our product page) and the current Tetracon product pages. Where we give general measurement advice, it is labelled as general. No prices are given; versions and the host probe or transmitter should be confirmed at quotation.

Why interchangeable RH sensors save time

  • Calibration lives in the sensor. According to the datasheet, the I7000XP stores its own unique calibration data within its integral electronics, which is what makes 100 % field interchangeability possible.
  • The swap takes seconds. The datasheet lists 30-second field interchangeability. A technician fits a freshly calibrated sensor and the point is back in service, while the removed sensor goes for checking or recalibration.
  • Each sensor arrives traceable. A traceable 5-point calibration certificate is listed among the highlights, so the record for each swapped sensor is clear for QA files and audits.
  • Less downtime and cost. Michell positions the sensor to minimize customer maintenance costs on all Michell HygroSmart-based probes and transmitters. In plants with many RH points, a small pool of spare sensors can be rotated through the installed base (our own suggestion).

What the I7000XP is, and what it is not

The I7000XP is a compact plug-in sensor, 33 mm long and 14 mm in diameter, with a 7-pin connection. It gives a voltage RH output (0-1 V or 0.2-1 V depending on the housing colour), a PT100 temperature signal and an I2C digital interface, on a +5 V DC supply. It is designed to fit into Michell HygroSmart probes and transmitters, which provide the loop output, display and mechanical protection for the plant. The datasheet lists related HygroSmart products such as the HS3 probe, the DT282/292 and DT284/294 duct-mount transmitters, the WR283/293 remote-probe transmitter and the PF211 HVAC probe. Tell us which host you have or need and we will confirm the matching sensor version with Michell.

The datasheet marks products that use this generation of sensor with a blue HygroSmart symbol (the orange symbol identifies the HS3 generation). Checking the symbol on the installed probe is a quick first step before ordering spares (general).

Operating envelope and where it fits

The sensor works across 0 to 100 % RH and -40 to +85 °C, within the datasheet's operating envelope with a maximum mixing ratio of 250 g water per kg dry air. Accuracy of ±1 % RH is specified between 5 and 95 % RH at 23 °C, with a typical thermal coefficient below 0.03 % RH/°C. The datasheet lists food processing, pharmaceutical, environmental, meteorological, agricultural, power, energy, nuclear, paper processing and transportation applications.

General advice: RH sensors dislike sustained condensation and contamination. Mount probes where air moves past the sensor, away from steam jets and spray, and use the probe's filter. If the process is hotter than +85 °C, consider a high-temperature transmitter such as the Rotronic DT722 (up to 150 °C, two 4-20 mA outputs), and for explosive atmospheres the intrinsically safe Rotronic HygroFlex5-EX. The I7000XP itself is not presented as hazardous-area equipment.

Running a sensor exchange programme

  • Count your points. List every HygroSmart-based probe and transmitter by location, criticality and the last check date (general).
  • Hold a small pool of calibrated sensors. For example, one spare per five to ten installed points, adjusted for criticality (our own rule of thumb). Keep stored sensors within the recommended +10 to +40 °C.
  • Swap on schedule. With ±1 % RH per year stability on the datasheet, an annual swap suits many HVAC and general process points; pharmaceutical and GMP areas usually follow their own validated interval (general).
  • Verify before and after. Check the removed sensor against a reference to record its as-found error, and keep the new sensor's 5-point certificate with the instrument record (general).

Checking and calibrating RH sensors on site

Field interchangeability works best alongside a way to verify readings in-house. The Michell HygroCal100 humidity validator is a portable 3.2 kg chamber covering 5 to 95 % RH that can check up to seven probes at once on battery power, with an optional chilled-mirror reference. For laboratory-grade calibration, the Rotronic HygroGen2 generates 2-99 % RH and -5 to +60 °C and calibrates multiple probes simultaneously. Our earlier note on humidity probe calibration in Pakistan covers these tools in more detail.

Typical uses in Pakistan

  • HVAC and air-handling units in pharmaceutical plants, hospitals and commercial buildings, where many RH points need regular checking.
  • Food processing, storage and agricultural facilities where humidity affects product quality.
  • Power stations and energy facilities, for example control rooms, switchgear rooms and inlet air (general).
  • Paper and textile processing, where humidity affects material properties.

These are general application areas from the datasheet and our experience of the sector; they are not customer references.

What to send with an enquiry

  • The host probe or transmitter model (or a photo of its label and HygroSmart symbol), and whether you need the white or black housing version.
  • The number of installed points and how many spare sensors you want to hold.
  • Operating temperature and humidity range, and any condensation, dust or chemical exposure.
  • Whether the temperature (PT100) output is needed.
  • Your calibration interval and whether you want on-site verification or calibration support.

FAQ

What does the Michell HygroSmart I7000XP measure?

Relative humidity from 0 to 100 % RH and temperature from -40 to +85 °C, with ±1 % RH accuracy (5 to 95 % RH at 23 °C) and ±0.2 °C temperature accuracy.

How quickly can the sensor be exchanged?

The datasheet lists 30-second field interchangeability. The sensor stores its own calibration data, so a calibrated replacement can be fitted without recalibrating the probe or transmitter.

Does it come with a calibration certificate?

Yes. A traceable 5-point calibration certificate is listed among the I7000XP highlights.

What outputs does the I7000XP have?

An RH voltage output of 0-1 V (white housing) or 0.2-1 V (black housing), a 3-wire PT100 temperature output as standard (or no temperature output as an option) and an I2C digital interface. It runs on +5 V DC ±1 V.

How stable is it?

Long-term stability is ±1 % RH per year, according to the datasheet.

Can it be used in hazardous areas?

The I7000XP datasheet does not give a hazardous-area rating. For explosive atmospheres, consider the intrinsically safe Rotronic HygroFlex5-EX.
