Hydrogen sulfide is one of the gas quality parameters that matters most on a natural gas network. It is toxic, it corrodes pipe and equipment, and it is normally written into the gas specification of supply and transportation contracts. For a transmission company, a gas processing plant or a large consumer, the question is not only how much H2S is in the gas, but how quickly an excursion is caught and whether the number can be defended when a buyer and seller disagree.
This note looks at the Galvanic ProTech 1000 Z2, a compact lead-acetate tape analyzer for ppb-level H2S and, with an option, true total sulfur. Figures come from the ProTech 1000 Z2 datasheet (the copy hosted on our product page) and the current Tetracon product pages. Where we give general engineering advice, it is labelled as general. No prices are given; ranges, stream count and options should be confirmed at quotation.
Why H2S needs a dedicated online analyzer
- Contract and pipeline limits. Gas specifications typically cap H2S and total sulfur at low ppm levels, so the analyzer has to be sensitive well below the limit, not just at it (general).
- Speed matters. An off-spec slug from a well, a treating unit upset or a saturated scrubber has to be seen quickly enough to divert or shut in before it travels downstream (general).
- Defensible numbers. At custody-transfer and metering points the method itself is part of the argument. The ProTech 1000 Z2 measures H2S per ASTM D4084, a recognised lead-acetate method, and Galvanic describes it as delivering custody transfer-defensible measurement.
How a lead-acetate tape analyzer works
According to our product page, sample gas reacts with a lead-acetate impregnated tape. H2S forms a dark stain, and the darkening is measured optically and converted to a concentration reading. Because the reaction is specific to H2S, the datasheet describes the measurement as no-interference. With the true total sulfur option, the analyzer also measures total sulfur (that option needs a hydrogen supply, listed under utility requirements).
The ProTech 1000 Z2 adds two things to this proven principle:
- Predictive alarms. The datasheet combines low-ppb sensitivity with predictive alarm analysis for a measurement-to-alarm time under 20 seconds. The absolute measurement T90 is 3 minutes, so the fast alarm is the early warning and the full reading follows.
- A new tape drive. Up to 70 days on a single roll, improved tape-to-tape repeatability, and a front-facing tape system that simplifies tape changes and waste removal.

Where it fits on a gas network
- Custody transfer and metering stations. The datasheet highlights compressor stations, metering buildings and brownfield upgrades, where a smaller footprint and lighter weight make retrofits easier.
- Gas processing plant outlets. Continuous ppb- to ppm-level H2S after amine or scavenger treating, with relay alarms to divert off-spec gas (general application of the listed outputs).
- Multi-point monitoring. Up to four H2S streams (or three total sulfur streams) on one analyzer, for example inlet and outlet of a treating unit plus a sales line (general).
- Refining, petrochemical and sulfur recovery. Listed on our product page alongside natural gas pipelines and custody transfer monitoring.
Installation notes from the datasheet
- Shelter. The analyzer must be installed indoors or under shelter, within 0 to +55 °C ambient. For outdoor skids in Pakistan's summer heat, plan an analyzer shelter with cooling (general).
- Sample system. A fast-loop sample system is preferred. The analyzer itself consumes 100 sccm of sample, and sample gas temperature can be 0 to 100 °C.
- Utilities. An eductor drive gas is required (air, nitrogen or sample gas). The total sulfur option also needs hydrogen and AC power (480 W max).
- Area classification. The certifications are Zone 2 / Division 2 (Ex ec db ic op is IIB+H2 T3 Gc). Check that this matches the area classification of the analyzer location (general).
- Integration. Four 4-20 mA outputs and four relays suit a direct hard-wired link to the station RTU or DCS, while Modbus TCP/IP or RTU carries the full data set (general).
